Text 1 · A day in the life of a busy freelancer (Unit 1)

Ani gets up at six and gets down to work by seven. As a freelance translator, she has to juggle several projects at once, so she draws up a to-do list every morning. It’s not easy to stay on top of everything, and she often runs out of time. When a deadline is looming, she cuts back on coffee breaks and turns down invitations from friends. Her biggest challenge is to strike a balance between work and personal life. “I used to take on too much,” she admits, “and I nearly burnt out.” Now she sets aside an hour every afternoon to unwind: she goes for a run or catches up with a friend. In the evening, she tries to switch off her laptop at eight, although an urgent email can throw her plans into chaos. She has learnt to delegate small tasks to a part-time assistant, which frees up time for creative work. On the whole, she thrives on variety, and she can’t imagine going back to a nine-to-five office job.

Text 2 · Taking up a new hobby (Unit 2)

After months of spending hours in front of a screen, Davit decided to take up rock climbing. At first, he felt out of his depth: the other climbers seemed to know the ropes, while he could hardly hold on to the wall. Still, he kept at it, and after a few weeks he began to get the hang of it. He signed up for a weekend course, where an instructor talked him through the basics of safety. “The hardest part is to overcome your fear,” she said. “Once you let go of it, you’ll make rapid progress.” Davit also picked up some useful tips from more experienced climbers and joined forces with a partner to train regularly. Of course, there were setbacks: he pulled a muscle once and had to take a break. But he never gave up, and last month he took part in a local competition. Although he didn’t come first, he was over the moon just to finish the route. “It’s a sense of achievement,” he says. “I can’t wait to push myself further.”

Text 3 · Growing up in a small town (Unit 3)

I grew up in a small town where everybody knew everybody. We played out until dark, made up our own games and got into trouble only occasionally. My parents brought me up to respect my elders, and I was expected to help around the house. Back then, we couldn’t afford many toys, but we made the most of what we had. When I turned eighteen, I moved away to study, and I struggled to adjust to city life at first. I missed out on many family events and often felt homesick. Over the years, I lost touch with several old friends, although a few of us still keep in touch. When I look back on those years, I realise how much the place shaped me. Today the town has changed beyond recognition: shops have closed down, young people have moved out, and the pace of life has speeded up. Still, whenever I go back, I get nostalgic about the good old days.

Text 4 · A trip that didn’t go to plan (Unit 4)

We had looked forward to the trip for months, but things went wrong from the start. Our flight was delayed, so we missed our connection and had to spend the night at the airport. By the time we checked in at the hotel, we were exhausted. The next morning, we set off early for the mountains, but the bus broke down halfway and we had to wait for hours. To make matters worse, it started pouring with rain. Luckily, a local man gave us a lift to the nearest village, where we stumbled across a charming guesthouse off the beaten track. The owner made us feel at home and put us up for two nights free of charge. We got to know the village, tried out the local cuisine and even took part in a traditional festival. In the end, it turned out to be the best part of the holiday. “Sometimes the best trips are the ones that don’t go according to plan,” my friend said as we headed back.

Text 5 · Job hunting (Unit 5)

Finding a job is rarely straightforward. Ani came across a vacancy online and decided to apply for it. She updated her CV, tailored it to the position and wrote a convincing cover letter. After a week, the company got back to her and invited her for an interview. She brushed up on her presentation skills and did some research on the company. During the interview she came across as confident and was able to back up her claims with examples. The manager asked about her strengths and weaknesses and whether she could work under pressure. A few days later, she was offered the job, but the salary was lower than she had expected. She decided to negotiate and managed to get a raise after the probation period. “It’s important to know your worth,” she says. “If you set your sights too low, you may miss out on better opportunities.” Her advice: be proactive, build a network and don’t take rejection personally.

Text 6 · University life (Unit 6)

Starting university is a big step. Many students struggle to keep up with the workload, especially in the first year. Lena signed up for several extra courses and soon found herself swamped with assignments. She learnt to plan ahead, prioritise tasks and meet deadlines. During exams, she stayed up late to go over her notes and cram key facts, but she later realised that steady study is more effective. Her tutor encouraged her to take initiative, ask for feedback and get involved in research projects. She also joined a society, where she developed her leadership skills. When she ran into difficulties with her thesis, she turned to her supervisor, who pointed her in the right direction. After three years of hard work she graduated with honours and was awarded a scholarship for a master’s degree. “University opened my eyes,” she says. “It taught me how to think critically and work independently.”

Text 7 · Rules, pressure and well-being at work (Unit 7)

Every workplace has rules and regulations that employees are required to follow. New staff are asked to abide by the dress code and to report any problems to their supervisor. Employees are entitled to a lunch break and are not allowed to use personal phones during meetings. If someone breaks the rules, they may receive a warning or even face disciplinary action. However, strict rules can put pressure on staff. Many people feel under pressure to work overtime, meet targets and deal with difficult clients. Over time, constant stress may take its toll on health and lead to burnout. Experts advise that workers should speak up when they feel overwhelmed, set boundaries and take regular breaks. Employers, on their part, should offer flexible hours, provide support and encourage a healthy work-life balance. “A happy employee is more likely to stay,” one manager says, “and loyalty pays off in the long run.”

Text 8 · The job interview (Unit 8)

On the day of the interview, Armen arrived ahead of time and took a deep breath. He was determined to make a good impression. The panel fired questions at him: How would he handle conflict? What was his greatest achievement? Armen took his time and answered honestly, giving specific examples and highlighting his strengths. When he was asked about a weakness, he admitted that he sometimes found it hard to say no, but explained how he was working on it. Towards the end, he asked about career prospects and training opportunities. “We’ll be in touch shortly,” the interviewer said. Armen shook hands and left feeling confident. A week later, they wanted to make him an offer. He weighed up the pros and cons, talked it over with his family and finally accepted the position. “The key,” he says, “is to stay calm and be yourself.”

Text 9 · Burnout and recovery (Unit 9)

For years, Lilit ran herself into the ground. She skipped meals, slept badly and relied on caffeine to keep going. One day she collapsed at work and was rushed to hospital. The doctor said she was suffering from exhaustion and needed to take it easy. “You can’t burn the candle at both ends,” he warned. Lilit took time off, ate a balanced diet and took up yoga. She made an effort to get enough sleep, and gradually she got back on her feet and regained her energy. She also learnt to recognise the warning signs of stress: constant headaches, loss of appetite and difficulty concentrating. These days she practises mindfulness, keeps fit and reaches out for help when she feels run down. “It’s a matter of priorities,” she adds. “I used to put work first; now I put my health first.”

Text 10 · Eating habits and cooking (Unit 10)

Nowadays many people rely on ready meals and grab a bite on the go. Experts warn that junk food may do long-term damage to health. Narek used to live on takeaways until he decided to learn to cook. He followed a recipe, chopped the vegetables, stirred the sauce and seasoned it to taste. His first attempt was a disaster: the rice was overcooked and the soup was bland. But he kept trying and soon learnt to cook from scratch. He now plans his meals in advance, cuts down on sugar and makes sure he eats fresh ingredients. “Cooking is therapeutic,” he says. On weekends he whips up a three-course meal for friends. He has a sweet tooth, so dessert is his speciality. “If you use good ingredients, you don’t have to go to a lot of trouble,” he insists. Now he wouldn’t dream of ordering a takeaway on a weeknight.

Text 11 · An accident and a rescue (Unit 11)

It was a freezing winter morning when the accident happened. A lorry skidded on the ice and crashed into a bus. Eyewitnesses said they heard a loud bang and rushed to help. Within minutes, the emergency services arrived: paramedics tended to the injured, while firefighters cut the passengers free. Some people were trapped inside. One woman, who had lost consciousness, was taken to hospital. “It could have been much worse,” a police officer said. “Most passengers escaped with minor injuries.” The driver was treated for shock. Later, the police launched an investigation to find out what had caused the crash. They ruled out drink driving but are looking into the road conditions. Residents praised the rescuers for their quick response, and the council promised to take measures to prevent accidents. “We can’t take safety for granted,” the mayor said. The woman later made a full recovery and thanked everyone who had come to her aid.

Text 12 · The day that changed my life (Unit 12)

I woke up feeling on edge, as I had a big presentation that morning. I got dressed, grabbed my bag and rushed out, only to realise I’d left my laptop at home. I ran back, lost precious minutes and got stuck in traffic. By the time I arrived, the meeting had already begun. I took a deep breath, walked in and apologised for being late. To my surprise, nobody seemed to mind. My manager smiled and said, “Don’t worry, it happens to the best of us.” I pulled myself together, borrowed a laptop and gave the presentation. At first I stumbled over my words, but soon I found my feet. When I finished, everyone burst into applause. Afterwards, my boss took me aside and offered me a promotion. I couldn’t believe my luck. Looking back, I realise that the day that had started so badly turned out to be a turning point in my career. It just goes to show that you should never give up.

Text 13 · Technology and AI (Unit 13)

Artificial intelligence is changing the way we live and work. Smart assistants respond to our voice commands, and chatbots handle enquiries. Supporters claim that AI will boost productivity, take over repetitive tasks and free people to focus on creative work. However, critics raise concerns about privacy and job losses. “We have to strike a balance between innovation and regulation,” one expert says. Companies collect data on a vast scale, and users often agree to terms without reading the small print. Cyberattacks are also on the rise: hackers break into systems, steal personal information and demand a ransom. To protect yourself, use strong passwords, keep your software up to date and back up your files. Many experts also call for stricter rules to hold companies accountable. It is hard to predict how far technology will go, but we can’t afford to ignore its impact. As the saying goes, technology is a good servant but a bad master.

Text 14 · News and social media (Unit 14)

We are bombarded with news every day. Headlines grab our attention, stories go viral within hours and rumours spread like wildfire. In this environment, it is easy to fall for fake news. Experts advise readers to check the source and look for evidence. “Don’t take everything at face value,” says journalist Mariam. “Ask who is behind a story and what they stand to gain.” Social media plays a key role in shaping public opinion, but algorithms tend to reinforce our views, creating an echo chamber. Influencers can reach millions and make or break a brand. Meanwhile, newspapers struggle to survive as advertising revenue dries up, and some outlets rely on donations. Governments crack down on misinformation, but critics argue this may threaten free speech. It’s a delicate issue: where do you draw the line? Perhaps the answer lies in media literacy: if people think critically, they will be less likely to be misled.

Text 15 · Community and volunteering (Unit 15)

When a flood hit the town, ordinary people rose to the occasion. Volunteers turned up at dawn, handed out food, set up temporary shelters and cleared away debris. “Nobody asked them to, but they pitched in anyway,” said the mayor. Charities launched an appeal and donations poured in. Local businesses chipped in with supplies, and schoolchildren raised money by selling cakes. For many volunteers, the experience was eye-opening. “I got a lot out of it,” said Karine, 18. “I learnt valuable skills and felt part of something bigger.” Sociologists say that such crises can bring communities closer together. In normal times, however, people keep themselves to themselves and barely know their neighbours. Experts argue that we should give something back: look out for elderly neighbours, support local shops and get involved in local projects. After all, a strong community can make a real difference when times get tough. As one volunteer put it, “It costs nothing to lend a hand.”

Text 16 · A complaint that went wrong (Unit 16)

Last month my new laptop arrived damaged. I contacted customer service and asked for a refund. The assistant apologised for the inconvenience and promised to look into it. A week passed, and I still hadn’t heard back. I called again, was put on hold for twenty minutes and then was passed from one person to another. Eventually, I lost my patience and lodged a complaint. “We take complaints seriously,” the manager said. “We will get to the bottom of this.” Finally, they offered me a replacement, but I insisted on a full refund. After a lot of back-and-forth, the money was credited to my account. The experience left a bad taste in my mouth. My advice: keep your receipts, read the terms and conditions, put your complaint in writing and don’t give in easily. If a company fails to deliver, consumers have every right to demand compensation, and they deserve to be heard.

Text 17 · Climate change (Unit 17)

Scientists agree that the planet is warming at an alarming rate. Glaciers are melting, sea levels are rising, and extreme weather is becoming more frequent. Emissions continue to climb, and governments are under pressure to act. Some countries have pledged to achieve net zero by 2050, but critics say words are not enough. Individuals can also make a difference: cut down on waste, switch to renewable energy and buy local food. Companies should reduce their carbon footprint, invest in green technology and phase out fossil fuels. Of course, change doesn’t happen overnight. Old habits die hard, and short-term interests often outweigh long-term benefits. Yet the cost of doing nothing may be far greater. If we fail to act, future generations will pay the price. As the activist said, “We are running out of time, but it’s not too late to turn things around.”

Text 18 · The vanishing keeper (Unit 18)

The lighthouse keeper vanished without a trace in 1900. When the relief boat arrived, the door was wide open, and the table was set for dinner. Investigators ruled out a storm, since the weather had been calm. Some suspected foul play, while others put it down to a freak wave. “It must have happened quickly,” one officer said. “He can’t have gone far.” Over the years, theories have come and gone, but the case remains unsolved. Historians have pieced together fragments of evidence, yet crucial details are missing. Perhaps the keeper was swept away while trying to save something. Or perhaps someone had a motive. “I wish we knew the truth,” said a descendant. The mystery continues to fascinate because it raises more questions than answers. At the end of the day, we may never know. Still, the story reminds us that the simplest explanation is not always the right one.

Text 19 · Living abroad (Unit 19)

When Tamar moved abroad to study, she experienced culture shock. Everything was unfamiliar: the food, the humour, even the way people greeted each other. At first she felt out of place, but she made an effort to adapt. She learnt to read body language, picked up local expressions and got used to the pace of life. “It takes time to settle in,” she says. She made friends with classmates from different countries and took part in cultural events. “I realised that stereotypes often don’t hold up,” she says. Living abroad broadened her horizons and made her more open-minded. She also came to appreciate her own traditions: Armenian hospitality, family gatherings and festive feasts. “When people ask me about my culture, I take pride in sharing it.” After two years, she was torn between staying and returning home. In the end, she went back, but she keeps in touch with her friends. “Culture is not something you can learn from books,” she says. “You have to live it.”

Text 20 · A world of challenges (Unit 20)

Millions of people live below the poverty line, and access to clean water remains a luxury in many regions. Wars force families to flee their homes, creating refugee crises. International organisations provide humanitarian aid, but resources are stretched to the limit. Experts say that tackling the root causes is more effective than treating the symptoms. Education plays a vital role in breaking the cycle of poverty, while economic growth can lift communities out of hardship. Yet inequality is widening: the poor are falling behind. Globalisation has brought benefits but also threats: jobs have been outsourced, local industries have collapsed and cultural identity is at risk. Governments must work together to address these challenges. Cooperation, not competition, is the way forward. Individuals can contribute by donating, volunteering and raising awareness. As the proverb says, many hands make light work.

Module 6. Texts 21–24

Text 21 · The art of persuasion (Unit 21)

A great speech doesn’t just inform; it persuades. Skilled speakers grab attention in the first ten seconds, build an argument and appeal to emotions as well as logic. They use rhetorical questions, repeat key phrases and tell personal stories to connect with the audience. “People forget facts, but they remember how you made them feel,” says one coach. To get your message across, keep it simple, speak with conviction and make eye contact. Good speakers also anticipate objections and address them head-on. They pause for effect, vary their tone and end on a strong note. Not only do they know their subject, but they also know their audience. Seldom does a speech succeed if it fails to engage the listeners. Rehearsing is crucial: practise in front of a mirror, time yourself and ask for feedback. And don’t be afraid to show your personality. After all, what makes a speech memorable is authenticity.

Text 22 · How to write a research paper (Unit 22)

A good research paper starts with a clear question. The writer reviews the literature, identifies gaps and formulates a hypothesis. Next, they collect data using reliable methods and analyse the results objectively. It is essential to avoid bias and to acknowledge limitations. The findings suggest that, to a certain extent, sleep affects memory, although further research is needed. Writers must support their claims with evidence, cite their sources and avoid plagiarism. Arguments should be balanced: while it is true that technology helps students, it could be argued that it also distracts them. The conclusion should summarise the main points, draw conclusions and make recommendations. Style matters too: use formal language, avoid contractions and be concise. Finally, proofread carefully: minor errors can undermine credibility. As one professor put it, “Good writing is rewriting.”

Text 23 · How to prepare for an exam (Unit 23)

Preparing for an exam requires a strategy. Start by taking a practice test to identify your weak points. Then draw up a study plan and stick to it. Break the material down into manageable chunks, review regularly and test yourself. When reading, skim for the main idea and scan for details; when listening, predict what you will hear and listen out for key words. In writing tasks, plan before you write and stay within the word limit. In the speaking test, don’t memorise answers: extend your responses and ask for clarification if you don’t understand. If you forget a word, paraphrase instead of freezing. On the day, get a good night’s sleep and stay calm. Time management is crucial: allocate time to each part and check your answers. Don’t panic if you get stuck; move on and come back later. Practice makes perfect.

Text 24 · My English journey (Unit 24)

Two years ago, I could barely hold a conversation in English. I made countless mistakes, mixed up tenses and struggled to find the right words. Today I can express myself fluently and understand most of what I hear. How did I get here? First, I set realistic goals and tracked my progress. I made a habit of reading for twenty minutes daily, kept a vocabulary notebook and used new words in context. I joined a speaking club, stepped out of my comfort zone and learnt from my mistakes. At times, I felt discouraged and was tempted to give up, but small victories kept me going. Now I can follow a series without subtitles and write a clear email. Of course, there is room for improvement: I need to work on my pronunciation and expand my vocabulary. But I’m proud of how far I’ve come. If I could give one piece of advice, it would be this: be consistent, be patient and enjoy the journey.
